Heritage Town Walks in Regional Victoria (Central Region)

Central Victoria is a landscape shaped by gold rush ambition, pastoral wealth, coastal industry and creative reinvention. Beyond Melbourne's metropolitan edge lies a collection of historic towns and seaside communities where bluestone buildings, old hotels, railway stations and civic halls tell the story of regional Victoria's growth.
Together, these municipalities form a diverse heritage corridor stretching from the volcanic plains west of Melbourne to the rugged cliffs of the Great Ocean Road and the pastoral valleys of the Macedon Ranges.
Inland, the grand boulevards of Ballarat recall Victoria's gold rush prosperity, while spa towns and former mining settlements in Hepburn Shire reflect a legacy of European influence and mineral springs tourism. The Macedon Ranges and Moorabool districts reveal stories of early pastoral runs, railway expansion and civic pride etched into 19th-century architecture.
Further south, coastal communities within Surf Coast and Bass Coast Shires showcase maritime heritage, timber milling, coal mining, and the rise of Australian surf culture. Meanwhile, Golden Plains Shire preserves the quiet charm of rural townships built on agriculture and gold.
Each heritage walk offers something distinct - elegant public buildings, preserved miners' cottages, historic bridges, seaside piers or grand homesteads - all best discovered on foot. Whether you're exploring a gold rush streetscape, a coastal village shaped by the ocean, or a rural township defined by bluestone and basalt, Central Regional Victoria provides a rich and walkable connection to the state's past.
The Central region includes the following council areas outside Melbourne and Geelong:
Ballarat City
(Ballarat and its suburbs plus the towns of Buninyong and Learmonth)Few places in Australia showcase gold rush heritage as dramatically as Ballarat. Once one of the richest cities in the world during the 1850s gold boom, Ballarat transformed gold into grand architecture, wide boulevards and enduring civic institutions. Today, heritage walks through Ballarat's historic centre, surrounding suburbs and nearby towns such as Buninyong and Learmonth offer a remarkable journey through colonial ambition, rebellion, prosperity and community pride.
From miners' cottages to monumental public buildings, Ballarat's story is written in stone, brick and iron lacework. Sturt Street, the city's grand boulevard, is lined with ornate 19th-century buildings reflecting extraordinary gold wealth. A heritage walk through central Ballarat is one of Victoria's most impressive architectural experiences. Decorative facades, cast-iron verandahs, bluestone detailing and civic statues and memorials create a cohesive and striking streetscape.
Just south of Ballarat, Buninyong offers a charming and compact heritage experience. Established during the gold rush, the town retains a strong 19th-century character. The main street features historic hotels, churches and civic buildings, while nearby residential streets contain attractive miners' cottages and early homes. Buninyong's elevated setting also provides sweeping views, reminding visitors why the area attracted settlers early on.
Bass Coast Shire
(Wonthaggi, Inverloch and Phillip Island)Bass Coast Shire offers a very different kind of heritage experience from Victoria's inland goldfields. Here, history is shaped by coal mining, coastal trade, farming and seaside tourism. Heritage walks through Wonthaggi, Inverloch and Phillip Island reveal stories of working communities, maritime enterprise and the growth of holiday culture along the coast.
Wonthaggi was established in 1909 to supply coal to Victoria's railways and quickly became a purpose-built mining town. Its heritage walk centres around the legacy of the State Coal Mine, one of the most significant industrial heritage sites in the state.
The State Coal Mine precinct preserves headframes, tunnels and historic mining buildings that reflect the town's industrial origins. Walking through this site offers insight into the lives of miners and their families, many of whom arrived from overseas to work underground.
Golden Plains Shire
(Bannockburn, Inverleigh and Steiglitz)Golden Plains Shire lies between Geelong and Ballarat, where volcanic plains, river valleys and low hills tell stories of pastoral settlement, gold discoveries and rural community life. Heritage walks through Bannockburn, Inverleigh and Steiglitz reveal a region shaped by farming, transport routes and the brief but transformative impact of the gold rush.
Steiglitz provides one of the most atmospheric heritage experiences in Victoria. Once a bustling gold rush settlement in the 1850s, it later declined, leaving behind a remarkably intact township now protected within the Steiglitz Historic Park. A heritage walk here feels like stepping directly into the goldfields era. Surviving buildings, including former hotels and the courthouse, stand along wide unsealed streets. Interpretive signage explains the rise and fall of the settlement, once home to thousands of miners seeking fortune.
Hepburn Shire
(Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs)Hepburn Shire sits at the heart of Victoria's central highlands, where gold rush ambition meets mineral springs culture and elegant hilltop townships. Heritage walks through Clunes, Creswick, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs reveal a region shaped not only by gold, but by health tourism, forestry and refined 19th-century architecture.
Clunes is widely regarded as one of the most intact gold rush towns in Australia. Its main street presents a remarkable collection of 19th-century commercial buildings, many constructed during the height of the gold boom. Solid brick and stone facades, decorative parapets and historic shopfronts remain largely unchanged. The towns former banks, hotels and civic buildings reflect the prosperity generated by deep lead mining in the area.
Macedon Ranges Shire
(Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend)The Macedon Ranges Shire blends gold rush ambition, pastoral wealth and refined country living beneath the slopes of Mount Macedon. Heritage walks through Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend reveal elegant 19th-century streetscapes, bluestone buildings and gracious public architecture that reflect the regions early prosperity and enduring charm.
Situated along key transport routes between Melbourne and the goldfields, these towns developed as important service centres and later as desirable country retreats. Today, their preserved buildings and tree-lined streets make them ideal for relaxed and rewarding heritage walks.
Moorabool Shire
(Bacchus Marsh and Ballan)Positioned between Melbourne and Ballarat, Moorabool Shire sits along one of Victoria's most significant historic corridors. Gold seekers, pastoralists and railway builders all passed through this landscape of river valleys, volcanic plains and rolling hills. Today, heritage walks through Bacchus Marsh and Ballan reveal a blend of agricultural prosperity, transport history and classic 19th-century architecture.
These towns developed as key stopping points along the road and rail routes to the goldfields, and their preserved buildings reflect both ambition and steady rural growth.
Murrindindi Shire
(Alexandra and Yea)Nestled between the Goulburn Valley and the Great Dividing Range, Murrindindi Shire is home to historic townships shaped by gold mining, farming, timber industries and railway development. The towns of Alexandra and Yea offer visitors the chance to step back in time through self-guided heritage walks that showcase beautifully preserved buildings, historic streetscapes and important community landmarks.
Surf Coast Shire
(Anglesea, Lorne, Torquay and Winchelsea)The Surf Coast Shire blends dramatic coastal scenery with fascinating layers of history from early pastoral runs and timber milling to seaside tourism and the birth of Australian surf culture.
