Daylesford - Musk - Lyonville - Trentham - Glenlyon Self-Drive Day Tour

Daylesford and Hepburn Springs are ideally located in Central Victoria, giving easy access to the surrounding towns and villages, and neighbouring Shires. So once you've explored Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, stay a little longer and enjoy the many nearby attractions!
Take this scenic 64km round drive from Daylesford that winds its way through the Wombat State Forest, stopping at the unique little villages dotted along the way. Wineries, waterfalls and world-renown bakeries, all an easy drive away.

1 - Musk
Head out of Daylesford along the Daylesford-Trentham Rd and you will pass through the tiny village of Musk. Nearby you'll find the Lost Children's monument, Istra Small Goods, Passing Clouds Winery and Daylesford Cider (who often have live music & entertainment). Nearby is Leitches Creek Mineral Spring, a lovely stopover for a picnic or a taste of the mineral water.

2 - Bullarto
Continue on to Bullarto. The historic train station is the highest point in the Shire at 750m above sea level and is Victoria's highest railway station. Locals flock here on blustery winter days as its the best chance to see snow.

Visit Philip Edwards' Bullarto Gallery and Wombat Native Plants micro-nursery. As you drive, pay careful attention as the forest is teeming with wildlife: wallabies, echidnas and of course - wombats.
3 - Lyonville
Continue along the Daylesford-Trentham Rd as it winds through Wombat State Forest on to Lyonville. Here you can enjoy a drink or a meal at the eclectic Radio Springs Hotel! Check opening hours, and if you are lucky, they might also be showing a vintage film. Take the waters' at the Lyonville Mineral Spring, nestled deep in the forest and a lovely spot for a picnic.

4 - Trentham
Finally visit historic Trentham - a quaint village retaining many historic buildings and a charming streetscape. It also boasts some of Central Victoria's most exciting foodie destinations. From award-winning French farmhouse restaurants, to iconic bakeries turning out traditional sourdough breads, pastries and delicious treats.
You can wander the street and enjoy cuisine from casual to elegant, in front of open fires in winter or under a canopy of trees in a magnificent beer garden in the warmer months. Shop the galleries, gift shops, boutiques and nurseries. Explore the Historic Police Precinct - dating back to 1866. On open days, chat with a volunteer & learn more about Trentham's unique history.
And don't forget to visit Trentham Falls - it is the highest single drop waterfall in Victoria, particularly impressive after rain!

For the energetic, walk the Domino Trail, a rail trail to Lyonville (6km one way), or the Wombat Trail to explore the town and surrounding forest (10km loop).
Detour - From Trentham it's easy to visit the neighbours -head further east to Tylden and beyond. You can access the beautiful Macedon Ranges; it's only 20 minutes to Kyneton or Woodend from Trentham, with Mount Macedon & Hanging Rock not much further. Alternatively, just 10 minutes south of Trentham you can drive into Mooroobool Shire and the small village of Blackwood. Along the way, there are a number of gardens and nurseries you can visit, like Garden of St Erth and Blackwood Ridge.

This route will take you back to Melbourne too if you're heading that way.
5 - Glenlyon
Driving towards Glenlyon, you will go past some wineries, farms and flower nurseries, as you travel through Tylden, Spring Hill and Denver. Keep an eye-out for farmgate stalls! Along the Malmsbury Road you will come across the village of Glenlyon. Relax at the iconic Glenlyon General Store, then take a walk along the Biolink Trail - a scenic stroll teeming with wildlife alongside the Loddon River.

Nearby wineries offer tastings & cheese boards, an indulgent way to pass an afternoon.
6 - Daylesford
Returning to Daylesford, be sure to spend some time to relax and take in all that Spa Country has to offer. The Daylesford Visitor Information Centre can inspire you with lots of suggestions - whatever your interests may be! And remember, you can always take the road less traveled. Turn off from the self-drive tour and make your own discoveries!
