RJ Hamer Arboretum Dragons Nests (Olinda)

RJ Hamer Arboretum Dragons Nests (Olinda)

The first Dragon's nests were seen at Neuman Track in Kallista. There are also a very extensive set of nests and bush cubbies in the R J Hamer Arboretum in Olinda.

To get to this hidden gem in the forest, follow these directions:
  • Head north along Silvan Road from Chalet Road along the eastern side of the Arboretum.
  • After 650m there is a small parking area where Mathias Road joins Silvan Road. Park here.
  • Very close by is a track named Poplar Track (according to Google at least) which connects to Mathias Road. Follow Poplar Track downhill.
  • You will come to a clearing on the left side of the path after about 150m. Follow the narrow, rough path for 50m into the forest to find the dragon nests.
There are about 20 cubbies and nests in the shady trees which has a carpet of leaves on the ground which are used to line the nests - after all, dragons needs some comfort. This is an area where kids imagination can run wild.

The RJ Hamer Arboretum is a fantastic area to explore with many interesting tree species.

Mathias Track is also a beautiful 8km return walk.
