These works of art by Jan Mitchell depict the first curator of the Geelong Botanic Gardens, Daniel Bunce and a young lady with a guilty look and hand behind her back. Daniel Bunce travelled with the explorer Leichhardt on his second expedition into the interior of Australia where he collected Sturts Desert Pea. In 1857 he commenced his work at the Geelong Botanic Gardens and successfully cultivated this wildflower. This attracted the attention of the ladies who desired it for their pressed flower collections and yes, this lady has her flower press at the ready!

Heritage Buildings:

The gardens are home to some of the city's original heritage buildings.

This historic Hitchcock fountain was originally located in Geelong's Market Square and was moved to this site in 1912. The nearby Traill Fountain was also relocated to the Gardens at this time.

Other significant heritage structures in the Gardens including the Raddenberry Shelter, Cabman's Shelter, the Historic 1838 Customs House, an original sunken glasshouse and the statue of Queen Victoria located in Eastern Park.

Remarkable Trees:

38 trees in the Gardens are listed on the National Trust Significant Tree Register, legacy to the foresight of our early curators. This Giant Redwood planted in 1873, is one of these outstanding trees. Other specimens include the Maidenhair Tree, Chilean Wine Palm, Spotted Gum, Black Walnut, Kauri Pine, Copper Beech, Bunya Pines and Flame Trees.
