Epsom Conservation Reserve (Mordialloc)

Epsom Conservation Reserve protects about 3.6 hectares of native grassland and an adjoining constructed wetland of almost two hectares. The grassland is a rare remnant of Plains Grassland in metropolitan Melbourne. The site was formerly the centre of Epsom Racecourse, which operated from 1886 to 1988.

Walking and Nature:

Follow the paths through the grassland and wetland areas. Look for waterbirds such as purple swamphens, egrets, herons and royal spoonbills. In wetter months, frogs can be heard in the grasslands, and seasonal native flowers include sun orchids, onion orchids and Early Nancy. Stay on the paths to protect the native vegetation. Lowlands copperhead snakes may be present in warmer months.

Facilities:

  • Accessible footpaths
  • Picnic tables and shelter
  • Seating
  • Drinking fountain
