Bike Tracks and Traffic Schools for Younger Riders in Melbourne



There are a number of places in Melbourne where younger kids can practice their bike riding skills and even learn the basics of the road safety rules. Some of the places are free to use while others need to be booked and a fee applies.

Bayswater Park Bike Training Area (Bayswater) has a brilliant bike training area for kids with a circular asphalt road with intersecting roads in the middle. There are all sorts of traffic signs including a working set of traffic lights.

Glen Park Reserve Bike Track (Bayswater North) is is a small circular concrete bike track for young kids located next to a nice playground with picnic facilities. It has a Y branch where one side is a rough path and the alternative side is a smooth path), a section of brick paving and two bumps. There are some road signs beside the path.

Royal Mile Avenue Playground (Berwick) has a wonderful kids bike track with road signs, charging station, shop, garage, swerve poles, ramp, roundabout and tunnel. Plenty of tables and seats around the track and a giant frog is getting ready to hop across the road.

Bonnie Brook Reserve Playground (Bonnie Brook) has a brilliant bike riding racing track around the playground with starting grid, start/finish line, twists and turns, banked turns and optional rollers. To complement the track, there is a fantastic drag racer and two racing car springers.

Berwick Waters Grand Prix Park Playground (Clyde North) has a concrete racetrack which circles the playground area and has a start / finish line, section of bumps, a big banked turn and a tunnel section under a bridge. The track is not flat which will make it unsuitable for the youngest of riders.

Delaray Park Playground (Clyde North) has a a cool bike track with markings and traffic signals around the sandpit.

Trillium Park (Craigieburn) has a playground, fenced soccer field with artificial grass, basketball court, picnic facilities and an extensive set of paths representing roads with various traffic signs. The paths intersect with a train track which has the Trillium Park Express train with carriage.

Traffic Park Bike Park (Craigieburn) has a huge area shaped like a big oval with a central roundabout. The roads have some little rises, wiggles, a fast banked turn, bridge with bumps, some road humps, railroad crossing and lots of road signs. Located next to an exciting playground, shelter with four tables, water tap and grassy areas.

Former Casey Traffic School Park (Cranbourne East) has an extensive set of roads and intersections with a range of traffic signals, crossings and signs remaining from when it was a traffic school park. The highlight is a tunnel and overpass.

Hansen Reserve (Footscray West) has a bike track for younger kids with a series of bumps, humps, ramps and a roundabout.

Hill n Dale BMX Park (Glen Iris) has a course with two lines of bumps and boxes which is suited to a range of skill levels. For younger kids there is a small box jump plus a series of small rollovers/waves.

The track has high grassy banks on the side which is an ideal place for Mum and Dad to watch the exploits below.

Healesville Bike Circuit (Healesville) is a concrete circuit with some side-branches, series of bumps, pedestrian crossing and road markings.

There are picnic tables, BBQ and water tap nearby plus an oval, basketball court, tennis courts, skate park, BMX track, playground and netball courts within the park.

Bells Reserve bike pump track (Kalkallo) is next to a playground and outdoor gym. There is a central concrete area with lots of ramps and slopes circled by a path with bumps and jumps.

Atherstone Traffic School (Melton South) provides a fun and engaging space to develop important road safety skills and gain confidence on bicycles, tricycles and scooters. It consists of a variety of intersections and signage to mimic the features of a real traffic experience and is free for the public to use.

Brickmakers Park (Oakleigh) is a large park which has a number of asphalt bike paths for kids including a small circle which could provide a location for a lot of cycling mayhem. Added attractions include a playground, garden, pond and a display of historical brick making equipment.

Cardinia Community Adventure Playground (Pakenham) has huge slides and a nice bike track for younger kids with road signs and buildings such as a bank, supermarket and ice-cream van.

Peppers Avenue Playground (Point Cook) has a cute area for young kids on bikes to learn about roads and the various traffic signs and markings. There is a pedestrian crossing, traffic roundabout, speed hump, give way signs and stop signs. Kids are not going to easily head off and try their new-found knowledge on a real road because the park is fenced except for an entrance area.

Delta Road Reserve (Watsonia) has an extensive road system for kids with road signs, roundabouts and even a place to fill up with petrol. It's on a slight slope which will tire out little legs before heading home.

Essendon Traffic School (Essendon) gives children, aged two to ten years, the opportunity to gain practical experience riding their bicycles while developing an understanding of the road rules on a mini-road setup complete with road signs, railway bells and traffic lights.

Public sessions are held every Saturday morning (except for public holiday long weekends) as well as Monday to Friday during school holidays. The cost is from $11.60 per child.

Kew Traffic School (Kew) offers children the chance to gain confidence and skills in a fun setting, away from the normal dangers on our roads.

The Traffic School can booked for private hire including birthday parties and has 2-hour play and ride sessions throughout the school holidays. Sessions are available for children up to 6 years of age and for children aged 6 to 10 years. The cost is $11 per child.
