Aireys Inlet - Eagle Rock Lookout

Eagle Rock Lookout is one of the Surf Coast's hidden gems, offering spectacular views of the famous Eagle Rock sea stack, the rugged coastline and the Southern Ocean. A short walk from the end of Eagle Rock Parade leads to the lookout, where visitors are rewarded with panoramic views over the Eagle Rock Marine Sanctuary and the dramatic cliffs that characterise this stretch of the Great Ocean Road.

The lookout takes its name from the impressive offshore rock formation, which resembles the head of an eagle when viewed from the right angle. Constantly pounded by the Southern Ocean, the sea stack is a striking reminder of the power of coastal erosion and has become one of Aireys Inlet's most photographed natural landmarks.

From the viewing platform, visitors can watch waves crashing against the cliffs, spot seabirds soaring on the ocean breezes and, during the migration season from May to October, keep an eye out for Southern Right and Humpback Whales travelling along the coast. Dolphins are also occasionally seen offshore.

The lookout can be combined with a walk to nearby Sandy Gully Beach, Split Point Lighthouse or sections of the Surf Coast Walk. Although the walk is short and relatively easy, visitors should stay behind safety barriers and keep well back from the cliff edges, particularly in windy conditions.

Eagle Rock Lookout is well worth visiting for its spectacular coastal scenery and the chance to see one of the Surf Coast's most distinctive natural landmarks. It is especially impressive at sunrise, when the first light illuminates the cliffs and Eagle Rock rising from the ocean.
