Aireys Inlet - Allen Noble Sanctuary

Allen Noble Sanctuary is a peaceful freshwater wetland in central Aireys Inlet, located between the Great Ocean Road and Painkalac Creek Estuary. A short, low-gradient gravel path and boardwalk provide excellent views across the wetland and opportunities to observe native birds and other wildlife.

The sanctuary provides important habitat for waterbirds and bush birds. Birds recorded in the area include Latham’s Snipe and Nankeen Night-Herons, while Short-finned Eels inhabit the wetland. Indigenous vegetation has been extensively replanted to improve biodiversity and provide food and shelter for wildlife.

The water level varies naturally according to rainfall and stormwater runoff. During dry periods there may be very little open water, although waterbirds can still be observed foraging among the rushes throughout the year.

Buckley’s Bunyip was carved from the remaining stump of an introduced cypress tree. The sculpture features wetland wildlife, weather, local stories and a reference to escaped convict William Buckley’s account of seeing a bunyip.

The sanctuary is easily accessible, with a generally level gravel track and boardwalk. Surface conditions may vary after rain.

Access for Dogs:

Keep dogs on a leash within the sanctuary unless signs indicate otherwise. The adjoining Bark Hut Reserve is designated as an off-leash area, but dogs must remain under effective control and are not permitted within the playground.
