Guide to Horse & Pony Riding Clubs in Melbourne

Melbourne offers plenty of clubs for those interested in horse or pony riding. Pony Clubs generally cater to riders up to 25 and offer instruction to improve your knowledge of caring for a horse and riding in various disciplines while there are a range of other clubs which cater for either adults only or a larger range of ages. These clubs offer a combination of competition, instruction and social riding. We have a summary of all the clubs to help you find a club which is suited to your needs.

The Horse Riding Clubs Association of Victoria (HRCAV) has over 250 member Clubs with over 5000 individual members spread across Victoria and parts of NSW and South Australia. The HRCAV caters for a wide range of riders who enjoy the social aspect of Club membership as well as access to the extensive competition system.

The Top Team Trophy (TTT) events were introduced by the HRCAV to increase opportunities for fair and equal inter-Club competition. Teams of 3 or 4 riders, compete at their own level with points earned for placings added to their team score. The TTT events are hugely popular with between 200 to 800 riders attending the events. There are annual TTT events in each of the disciplines, all hosted by HRCAV Clubs. The winning Club has the option to host the following TTT and this ensures that the events are spread around the state.

Pony Club Victoria (PCV) consists of around 200 Clubs all over the State and into NSW. Membership of Pony Club Victoria enables members to participate (ride, coach or officiate) in any Pony Club Victoria affiliated club or sanctioned activity/event or development course.

Joining a Pony Club gives the opportunity to meet other people with a love for horses and riding, improve your riding skills and compete in competitions and clinics. Information about Pony Clubs is:
  • There is no set minimum age and each club will set an age. Normally it is the year that you turn 6 years old.
  • Generally you can ride as a member up to and including the year you turn 26 years. However, some clubs offer riding for adults too.
  • Your horse has to be 3 years old and they cannot jump until they are 4 years old.
  • Rallies are the backbone of a Pony Club. A rally is a structured, supervised day, where lessons are conducted on horse riding and horsemastership. There is often an additional cost for rallies above the base membership cost to cover the instruction. Rallies are generally held once per month.
  • Some clubs run the "Riders without Horses program".
  • If you don't have a horse, you can still enjoy Pony Club by joining a 'Pony Accredited Rising Centre', where you can ride the experienced school horses they provide. Centre Membership is for riders aged 5-80.
  • Most clubs offer "Come & Try". You can attend one (or more) rally and pay your insurance. If you enjoy it and want to come again then you pay the yearly subscription less the insurance.
  • Some clubs offer a "Ready2Ride program". This program is open to 10 years and under and is an introduction to Pony Club to build confidence in riding and horsemastership in a fun, age appropriate program.
