Wye River Walk

Follow the Wye River upstream on a gentle valley walk through the Wye River Recreation Reserve, caravan park and surrounding bushland. The walk starts beside the playground near the Wye River General Store and follows the meandering river inland.

The route begins on a gravel path and passes rushes and a fishing platform before continuing along the grassy riverbank through the BIG4 Wye River Holiday Park. Beyond the caravan park, the walk passes pasture and bushland before entering a fern-filled section of forest near the old weir. Return along the same route.

Ngatanwarr (Welcome)

As you walk beside the Wye River, consider the ancestors of the Maar nation and the Gadubanud people's deep cultural and spiritual connection to this area. The river provided a culturally rich and ecologically sustainable life for thousands of years and formed a boundary between the Gadubanud people and neighbouring clan groups. It was also a place to gather and celebrate culture.

Visitors can help protect Gadubanud Country and its cultural heritage by respecting the natural environment and learning from the knowledge passed down by its Traditional Owners.

UPDATE

This was a wonderful walk beside the river with features such as river crossings. Unfortunately a massive flooding event occurred in January 2026 which flushed massive trees down the river and eroded the banks where the stepping stones were located.

This means that the part of the trail north of the BIG4 Wye River Holiday Park is closed (even though there no longer seems a real danger in our opinion). Before reaching the stepping stones the track now diverts along a fenceline beside a huge grassy area and then turns left and runs along the southern side of the Holiday Park before entering the roads of the Holiday Park. This area had a large number of kangaroos and sulphur crested cockatoos as well as kookaburras and crimson rosellas.
