Williamstown Heritage Walk (Community)

This 2.25km walk, with optional 1.2km extension along the Strand, covers the community of Williamstown.

Begin at the Anchor in Commonwealth Reserve.

Cross Nelson Place and proceed along Parker Street.
2.1 Post and Telegraph Office. Built in 1859.

The former Williamstown Post and Telegraph Office was constructed in 1859-60. A telephone exchange was established in 1893 and the building was substantially remodelled in 1895.
2.2 Williamstown Chronicle Office.
The newspaper was first published in 1854 and closed in 1964.
2.3 28 Parker Street.
Built in 1856.
Turn left into Cecil Street.
2.4 Roman Catholic Church Precinct.
The church was designed by William Wardell. Completed 1933.
2.5 Williamstown Primary School.

Built in 1878.
Return to Parker Street, continue to Electra Street and turn to the right.
2.6 Mechanics Institute.

Building work on the Mechanics Institute, designed by John Flannagan, began in 1860. A two storey wing was added in 1869, and further extensions in 1880 and 1890.
2.7 Masonic Hall.

Williamstown's first Freemasons' Lodge was formed in 1854, the second, Lodge of Industry, in 1857, absorbing the first in 1862. The third, (Excelsior Lodge 1866) amalgamated with the second to form the Excelsior Lodge of Industry (1873) and they built this Temple in 1889.

2.9 Tudor House.

2.11 Dennis Reserve and Gas Lamp.

Coronation Lamp 1902. Decorative incandescent gas lamps were erected 1896-1906 in the centre of the major intersections commemorating the Jubilee of Queen Victoria, Coronation of Edward VII and Jubilee of Williamstown Council. Progressively removed as traffic hazards from the 1920s.

2.14 Town Hall, Ferguson Street.

Williamstown Borough was proclaimed in 1856. Early meetings were held in the former Williamstown Court House, near the corner of Cecil and Thomson Streets. Construction of this town hall commenced in 1918.
Turn right along Ferguson Street.
2.15 Punshon's Store, 82-84 Ferguson Street.

Punshon's Store was designed by C.J. Polain. It was completed in 1890 as a General Store with cellar and roof garden.
Turn right into Electra Street.
2.16 65 Electra Street.
Built in 1884.
2.17 62 Electra Street was residence of Customs Official.
This house was constructed in 1855 as the residence of a Williamstown customs official.
Turn left into Pasco Street.
2.18 Manchester Unity Hall, 26 Pasco Street.

2.19 Church of England Precinct.

Turn to the right along Nelson Place.
2.20 Former Clarendon Hotel. 231 Nelson Place.
Opened as a pub 1852-1860's.
2.21 Modern Buildings, 217-219 Nelson Place.
Completed in 1909 and constructed in concrete by local builder John Garnsworthy, this is an early and original use of concrete in building construction. It housed a shoe store and later, a watch maker.
2.22 Yacht Club Hotel, 207 Nelson Place.
Formerly site of Bank of Australasia 1853, and Lord Clyde Hotel 1877. Rebuilt 1892 as Yacht Club Hotel. Modelled in the parapet is the "Cooeeana", the yacht of Captain Press, first commodore of Hobson's Bay Yacht Club, founded 1888.
2.23 Former Advertiser Newspaper Office, 206 Nelson Place.
