Warrnambool - History House (HeritageWorks)

History House is home to Warrnambool HeritageWorks, a volunteer-run archive and research centre operated jointly by the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and Warrnambool Family History Group.
The collection preserves the stories of Warrnambool and the surrounding district from early European settlement through to the late twentieth century. Visitors can explore local records, undertake family-history research or ask volunteers for help locating information.
The collection includes:
- More than 10,000 historical photographs
- Original documents and council records
- Books, newspapers and local-history publications
- Maps and property information
- Family-history and genealogical records
- Oral histories
- Textiles and historical artefacts
- Records deposited by Warrnambool City Council and the Public Record Office Victoria
- Material covering local people, buildings, businesses, organisations and events
History House normally contains changing historical displays. However, the official website advises that there are currently no displays while restoration work is underway. The HeritageWorks archive and research centre remains the main reason to visit.
This is primarily a research centre rather than an interactive museum. It is most suitable for older children and teenagers investigating local history, family connections, historic buildings or school projects. Children should remain with an adult and handle historical material only as directed by volunteers.
Researchers should contact HeritageWorks before visiting to make sure a volunteer with knowledge relevant to their enquiry will be available. Remote research can also be undertaken for a fee.
Photographs and a selection of books and booklets about Warrnambool history are available for purchase.
Email contact is preferred for general and research enquiries.
Opening Hours:
History House is open by appointment or while volunteers are on duty. As opening times can vary at this volunteer-run facility, check the current opening hours and contact HeritageWorks before making a special trip.
Cost:
General entry is free. Fees apply for research services, photocopying, historical photographs and publications. See the research information for current charges.
