Wangaratta Region Fishing Guide



Wangaratta is located on the junction of two rivers - The Ovens and The King River. These rivers and the many other rivers, streams, lakes and dams within the Rural City offer excellent fishing for the keen amateur to the avid professional angler.

Further down is a map with some popular fishing spots marked on it. These are just a starting point - get out and explore the area, talk with some locals and you will discover many great spots.

Some fish you might catch in the region include; Murray cod, golden perch, redfin, trout, trout cod, macquarie perch, blackfish, rainbow trout.

When you pick up your bait and tackle equipment, have a chat to the staff there and they will give you an idea on what is biting where and on what.

Recreational Fishing Licences


Licence Fees, Availability and Renewal
A fishing licence is required by all to fish in Victorian waters.
Exemptions include - under 18yrs, 70 years or over, holder of a Victorian Seniors card, Veteran Affairs Pension card, TPI card holders or Commonwealth Pensioner Concession card coded DSP, DSP blind, age, age blind or CAR.

State Boundaries
Please check all water ways for state boundaries and apply for appropriate fishing licence. All waters marked on this map require a Victorian Fishing Licence.

Interstate Visitors
Fishing Licences issued by other states are not valid in Victoria.

Faithfull St, Wangaratta. Right in the heart of the CBD of Wangaratta. Boat ramp and fishing off the flat bank.

Templeton St Boat Ramp - The Ovens River (green place marker on map)
Templeton St, Wangaratta. Located right in Wangaratta. Boat ramp and large grassy area. Also start of bike/walk path to another popular spot—Northern Beaches.

Northern Beaches - The Ovens River (yellow place marker on map)
College St, Wangaratta. 600 metres from CBD. Located at end/start of walking/bike track. Popular local swimming and fishing spot. No boat ramp.

The Walnuts - The Oven’s River (blue place marker on map)
Warby Range Rd, off the Wangaratta Yarrawonga Rd, Killawara 10.6km from CBD. Sealed road becomes dirt and ends with a steep incline to access river. Popular fishing spot for locals. No boat ramp. No facilities.

Stan Allen Reserve - King River (light blue pin on map)
Glenrowan Myrtlford Rd, Oxley. 11.6km from Wangaratta. No boat ramp. Bank slope is moderate to steep. Also popular for swimming and camping. Toilets across road in park.

Pioneer Bridge’s - King River (yellow pin on map)
Midway on the Markwood-Everton Rd
21km from Wangaratta. Lovely sandbank. Popular camping spot also. Toilet. No boat ramp.

Moyhu - King River (green pin on map)
Moyhu Meadow Creek Rd, Moyhu. Turn off the Wangaratta Whitfield Rd. Fishing near the bridge on pebbly beach. Flat river access. No facilities.

Edi Cutting - King River (purple place marker on map)
Wangaratta Whitfield Rd, Edi. 37km from Wangaratta. Flat river access, pebbly beach. Large stretch of river access and camping area. No boat ramp. Toilets & fireplace.

Lake William Hovell (red pin on map)
Upper King Valley Rd, Cheshunt. 72km from Wangaratta. Picturesque lake in the King Valley. Boat ramp. Max limit of 7.5w(10hp). Picnic area with toilets, tables, fire places.

Fosters Dam (light blue place marker on map)
Glenrowan Rd, Glenrowan 16km from Wangaratta.
Family fishing lake. Toilet, shelter shed, bbq & off road parking.
Small lake (80m diameter) 500m north of town on old Hume Highway. Stocked with advanced yearling rainbow trout in school holidays as part of the Family fishing lakes program - limits apply). No boating.
