Walhalla - Tramline Walkway

The Walhalla Tramline Walkway follows the route of a historic timber tramway along the hillside above Walhalla, offering picturesque views of the township, surrounding mountains and Stringers Creek valley.
The original timber tramway was used during Walhalla's gold-mining era. Today, the former tramline provides a scenic walking route through bushland and fern-filled gullies, with several access points from the township.
Once walkers have climbed to the tramline, the main path is relatively level and follows the contours of the hillside. The access tracks from Main Road are generally steeper.
The walkway can be joined from Walhalla North Gardens, the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine car park, near the Old Brass Band Rotunda and above the historic Walhalla Post Office.
The section above town is approximately 1.8 km from Walhalla North Gardens to the Post Office, while longer walks are possible by combining different access points.
The tramline continues south towards Thomson Station, where it forms part of the Australian Alps Walking Track.
Distance: Approximately 2.5 km for a longer town walk, depending on access points
Time: Approximately 1 hour
Grade: Easy to moderate - some steep access tracks
Track: Walking track with multiple access points
Start/Finish: Various access points along Main Road, Walhalla
How to Get There:
For relatively level access to the tramline, start at the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine car park. Other access tracks are available from the town centre and Walhalla North Gardens.
Walhalla North Gardens is a camping and picnic area at the northern end of Walhalla township, along Main Road (Walhalla Road). It is located just north of the Long Tunnel Extended Gold Mine, beside Stringers Creek. This is the northern starting point of the Walhalla Tramline Walkway, which follows the hillside above town towards the historic Post Office.
