Waanyarra Walking Track

The Waanyarra Walk is a scenic loop through the historic goldfields and box-ironbark forest surrounding Waanyarra Recreation Site.

Distance: Approximately 7 km loop
Time: Approximately 2 hours
Terrain: Gentle hills
Track: Well-formed track with some obstacles and occasional steps
Start/Finish: Waanyarra Recreation Site

The walk passes through Dunolly State Forest, an area rich in both natural and gold mining history. Follow the track through box-ironbark forest, looking for native birds, wildlife and seasonal wildflowers along the way.

The route passes old gold workings and remnants associated with the former Waanyarra township. During the gold rush Waanyarra developed into a busy mining settlement, and evidence of this history can still be found scattered throughout the surrounding bush.

The walk also passes the historic Waanyarra Cemetery, which contains the graves of many early goldfields settlers.

Waanyarra Recreation Site provides a convenient starting point and is accessible by 2WD vehicles. The site is also used for camping, picnicking, prospecting and exploring the surrounding forest.

Access for Dogs:
