Torquay Surf Beach
Torquay Surf Beach is one of Australia's most iconic surfing beaches and is widely regarded as the birthplace of Australian surf culture. Located at the western end of Torquay, the beach attracts everyone from beginners taking their first surfing lesson to experienced surfers enjoying the consistent waves that have made the Surf Coast famous around the world.
A broad sandy beach stretches beneath low sandstone cliffs, providing plenty of space for swimming, surfing, beach games and long coastal walks. During the warmer months the beach is patrolled by Surf Life Saving Victoria, making it a popular destination for families as well as surfers. The designated swimming area is separated from the main surfing zone, allowing both activities to be enjoyed safely.
The beach forms part of the renowned Surf Coast Walk, with a scenic shared path following the clifftops towards Jan Juc. Several lookout points along the path provide spectacular views of the coastline, while nearby Point Danger offers panoramic views across Bass Strait and an excellent vantage point for whale watching during the migration season.
Torquay Surf Beach is also closely linked to Australia's surfing heritage. The nearby Surf World Museum celebrates the history of surfing, while internationally recognised surf brands including Rip Curl and Quiksilver were founded in Torquay. Each year thousands of visitors come to experience the town's unique surfing atmosphere.
Facilities include free parking, seasonal lifesaving patrols, public toilets, outdoor showers, Surf Life Saving Club, surf schools nearby, picnic areas, walking and cycling path, beach access ramps, lookouts, cafés within walking distance and dog-friendly areas nearby (restrictions apply).
Surf Safety
Torquay Surf Beach is patrolled by the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club, one of Victoria's oldest surf lifesaving clubs, established in 1945. The club's trained volunteer lifesavers patrol the beach throughout the official surf lifesaving season, with additional Life Saving Victoria lifeguards assisting during the busy summer holiday period. Torquay Surf Beach is one of Victoria's busiest ocean beaches.
Despite its popularity, Torquay Surf Beach has several powerful rip currents, including a permanent rip known locally as "The Escalator" near the southern end of the beach. Conditions can change quickly depending on tides, swell and wind direction. Visitors should always swim between the red and yellow flags, follow the directions of lifesavers and avoid swimming outside patrol hours. Before entering the water, check the warning signs and observe the surf conditions, particularly if you are unfamiliar with ocean beaches.
