Terang RSL
Terang RSL Sub-Branch combines a community RSL hall with an extensive collection of military memorabilia, interactive displays and the publicly accessible Lest We Forget Memorial Garden.
Established in 1921, the Sub-Branch occupies a corrugated-iron hall constructed by local First and Second World War veterans on land donated by two First World War veterans. The collection was developed with assistance from veterans and other members of the Terang community. It explores the experiences of local service personnel and the impact of war on the district.
Indoor highlights include:
- Military uniforms, equipment, photographs and other memorabilia
- Replica Western Front command post and dugout
- Crawl-through tunnel popular with visiting school groups
- Displays recounting the stories of local service personnel
- RSL hall used for community activities and commemorative events
Len's Tram:
A restored Melbourne W-class tram, number 871, stands within the RSL grounds. Known as “Len's Tram”, it was named in honour of Terang Second World War veteran Len Pomeroy.
The tram entered service in Melbourne in 1941 and was later allocated to the Terang RSL through Victoria's retired-tram adoption program. Thousands of volunteer hours were spent restoring its traditional green-and-yellow appearance.
One end of the tram contains a replica Second World War recruiting centre. The display recognises the role Melbourne's trams played in transporting workers, recruits and service personnel during the war.
The tram can be viewed from the memorial garden at any time, but access to its interior is limited to RSL opening times and arranged tours.
Lest We Forget Memorial Garden:
The outdoor 'Lest We Forget Memorial Garden' is accessible at all times, including when the RSL hall and museum are closed. Dedicated in 2017, the garden commemorates local men, women and animals associated with military service.
Memorials within the garden include:
- Terang and District Nurses Memorial, featuring artwork by local artist Brett Brumby
- Remembrance trees dedicated to Terang and district men and women who served in conflicts and those who made the supreme sacrifice
- Service Animals Memorial
- Memorial tree honouring veterans of the Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts
- Memorial seat dedicated to past and present Terang RSL members
- Centenary of the Armistice honour roll
- Memorial trees and plaques commemorating individual local service personnel
- Restored W-class tram number 871, known as “Len's Tram”
Opening Hours:
The Lest We Forget Memorial Garden is outdoors and can be visited at any time. The RSL hall, interior of Len's Tram and military memorabilia displays are not open daily. Tours are generally available by arrangement, with occasional public open days advertised on the Terang RSL Facebook page. Confirm access before travelling.
Cost:
The memorial garden is free to visit. Entry to the hall and museum displays is generally by donation when open. Confirm arrangements when booking a tour.
