Skipton & District Historical Society

The Skipton & District Historical Society operates a local history museum within Skipton’s historic Court House and former Police Residence at the Stewart Park Historical Precinct.

The museum contains displays, photographs, maps, family histories, records and other material relating to Skipton and the surrounding district. The former police stables house a display exploring the district’s wool industry.

The Court House is an early portable building and one of the few surviving examples from Victoria’s gold-rush era. It was relocated from Beaufort to Skipton in 1867 and remained in use until 1983. The adjoining Police Residence was built in 1910.

The surrounding property includes the historic police stables, a covered barbecue area and access to the picnic facilities and attractions of Stewart Park.

Opening Hours:

Usual opening hours are 2pm to 4pm on the third Sunday of each month. Visits outside these hours can be arranged by contacting the society.

Meetings are usually held from 2pm on the first Sunday of each month, and visitors are welcome.

As the museum is operated by volunteers, confirm opening arrangements before travelling.
