Seven Acre Rock (Gembrook)

Seven Acre Rock (Gembrook)

Enjoy a short 1.5km return walk to this large rocky outcrop with grand views of Bunyip State Park, and finish with a scenic lunch at the picnic area below.

Seven Acre Rock is a large rocky outcrop that provides extensive picturesque views of the Yarra State Forest. On a clear day, it's possible to see Western Port Bay and Port Phillip Bay.

The site is close to Powelltown and easily accessible from Noojee or Gembrook, about 80km east of Melbourne.

In the 1926 Black Sunday and 1939 Black Friday bushfires the area was badly damaged. As the forest struggled to regenerate naturally, mountain ash was planted making up a lot of the thick landscape seen today.

Head off on this short walk through mountain ash forest for rewarding views of the surrounding area and return for lunch at the scenic picnic area with with good facilities including a car park, toilet, picnic table and fire pit.

Starting from the picnic area this return walk leads to Seven Acre Rock, a granite outcrop with commanding views across the Yarra Ranges. It's a relatively easy and short trek with a small rocky climb at the end. Be sure to stay clear of the edge as this is a natural lookout with no barriers.

Review:

A lovely walk to the lookout point flanked by tree ferns and tall trees (unfortunately with some blackberry bushes along the first section of the walk). As you get closer to the lookout the track gets rockier with bigger boulders on or beside the path. Take care because many of the rocks are mossy and a bit slippery.

When you get to the highest point, skirt around the rocks to find a huge boulder with lovely scenic views. Take care, especially with kids, because there is a scary drop without any handrails.
