Rutherglen - Portals Into Rutherglen



Portals Into Rutherglen is a series of six artworks that reveal stories from the town’s history. The artworks are set among historic Main Street shopfronts, with another at the Rutherglen Swimming Pool. QR codes beside the artworks link to more information.

How to Get There:


Start at the Rutherglen Wine Experience and Visitor Information Centre, 57 Main Street, Rutherglen. The Main Street artworks are spread along the street; the final portal is at the swimming pool on High Street.

Portals:


1. Aitken and Fullerton Grocers
At the Rutherglen Visitor Information Centre, 57 Main Street. The artwork tells the story of the historic general store and the Aitken and Fullerton families.

2. Red Boot Shop
At the vacant block beside 68 Main Street. The sculpture honours the former Red Boot Shop and its proprietor, William Cumming.

3. Mothers Little Helpers
At the former chemist shop, 113 Main Street. The stained-glass artwork reflects the history of the pharmacy.

4. Kit and Kaboodle
At Valentines Bakehouse, 124–126 Main Street. The mural explores the history of businesses at the site.

5. Symbols of Practice
At a historic residence on Main Street. The mosaic reflects the doctors and medical practice once based there.

6. A Splash of Summer and Bill’s Bench
At the entrance to Rutherglen Swimming Pool, High Street. The mural celebrates the pool, and Bill’s Bench was made using the pool’s original diving board.
