Rutherglen - Lake Moodemere Trail Walk

Lake Moodemere is a natural billabong surrounded by River Red Gum forest and habitat for native birds and other wildlife. The long circuit passes the lake, Murray River, farmland and vineyards using gravel roads, grassy tracks and short roadside sections.

Kwat Kwat artist Tommy McRae lived beside Lake Moodemere with his family during the 1880s. He created and sold books of drawings, raised poultry and fished for Murray Cod.

The lake hosts the Rutherglen Rowing Regatta, which was first held in 1863 and is described as Australia's oldest continuously run rowing regatta.

13 km circuit
Approximately three hours
Grade 2
Suitable for active families and older children
Gravel roads, grassy tracks, gates and roadside sections
The trail can become submerged after rain

Route:

Start at the information shelter on Lake Road
Keep left at approximately 1.1 km and follow the gravel road beside the Murray River
Continue through the grid at approximately 3.2 km
Turn right onto O'Donoghues Road at approximately 5.4 km
Turn right onto Distillery Road and continue past Pfeiffer Wines
Follow the gravel road and grassy track with the water on the right
Turn right at the Murray Valley Highway
Turn right onto Moodemere Road and then Lake Road to return to the lake
