Rushworth - Waranga Basin and Harriman Point

Waranga Basin is a huge inland waterway about 8km north-east of Rushworth and is a popular destination for boating, fishing, kayaking, cycling, birdwatching, picnicking and other outdoor recreation. It is the fourth-largest inland waterway in Victoria.

The basin was created from a natural wetland formerly known as Gunn's Swamp. Construction began in 1905, with workers using picks, shovels, horses and drays to construct the enormous earth embankment. The embankment was subsequently raised between 1915 and 1921 to a maximum height of about 12 metres.

Harriman Point is one of the principal public recreation areas on Waranga Basin. It has long been used as a picnic and boating area and provides excellent access to the water.

There is a 155m-long dual-lane concrete boat ramp, together with a turning circle and gravel parking. This provides launching facilities for boating, sailing, windsurfing, fishing, jet skiing and kayaking.

There are actually two launching levels at Harriman Point. Goulburn-Murray Water advises that the high-level ramp is usable when Waranga Basin is above 41% capacity, while the low-level ramp operates down to approximately 24%. Water levels change significantly, so check current storage levels before bringing a boat.

Fishing is popular, with species including Redfin, Murray Cod, Golden Perch, Trout and Murray Spiny Crayfish.

Away from the water, visitors can explore foreshore trails, cycle, birdwatch, fly kites or find a quiet place for a picnic.

There is an all-abilities toilet block at Harriman Point.

Camping:

Camping and campfires are not permitted on Goulburn-Murray Water foreshore or lakebed land. Camping is available at the privately operated Lake Waranga Caravan Park and Holiday Camp.

Opening Hours:

Access and boating conditions can vary with water levels and operational requirements. Check the Waranga Basin website before visiting.

Access for Dogs:

Dogs are permitted but must be on a lead and/or under control at all times. Owners must clean up after their dogs.
