Quambatook Silo Cinema

Quambatook Silo Cinema is a unique community-run outdoor cinema where movies are projected directly onto the town’s working grain silos. Screenings are held beneath the Mallee night sky and have become one of Quambatook’s signature attractions.

The idea began in 2014 when artist-in-residence Dave Houston projected a short film about Quambatook locals onto the silos. The clarity of the projected image inspired the Quambatook Community Development Association to obtain a powerful projector and develop the concept into a regular community event. The first public movie screening was The Labyrinth during National Youth Week in April 2016.

The cinema now generally screens a couple of times each year, mainly around a new moon in February and October. The cinema specialises in Australian movies, with previous screenings including The Dressmaker, The Water Diviner, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Castle, Crocodile Dundee, The Man from Snowy River, The Dish and Charlie and Boots.

The experience is about more than the movie. Local community groups provide food such as hamburgers, baked potatoes, waffles, sausage sizzles, drinks and coffee, while visitors are also welcome to bring a picnic. Bring your own chairs and blankets for the outdoor screening.

The silos remain operational, which is one reason screenings are limited in number. Harvest activity, late summer sunsets and winter conditions all influence when events can be held. The cinema is also an important fundraiser for Quambatook community groups and businesses.
