Princetown - Rivernook Beach

Rivernook Beach is a quiet riverside beach on the Gellibrand River, just upstream from where the river enters the Southern Ocean. Unlike the exposed ocean beaches nearby, Rivernook offers calm waters and a peaceful natural setting surrounded by coastal vegetation, making it a popular spot for picnics, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

The beach is located within Princetown Recreation Reserve and is easily reached from the nearby car park. A grassy foreshore provides plenty of space to relax, while the shallow river is ideal for launching small watercraft or enjoying a gentle paddle. The area is also known for its birdlife, with pelicans, swans and numerous waterbirds regularly seen along the river.

Rivernook Beach is an excellent alternative for families wanting to enjoy the water without the large surf found on nearby ocean beaches. Although the river is generally calm, visitors should still supervise children closely and be aware of changing water levels and currents after heavy rain.

Water Safety
Although the water is usually calm, the Gellibrand River can have currents and deeper sections.

There are no lifesaving patrols at Rivernook Beach.
Children should always be supervised near the water.
Wear a lifejacket when canoeing or kayaking.
Avoid entering the water after heavy rain or flooding, when currents may be stronger.
Be aware of boats and other watercraft using the river.
