Portland - Kardermudelar Karweeyn Mirring (Portland Bay Dance Ground)

Kardermudelar Karweeyn Mirring, also known as the Portland Bay Dance Ground, is an inclusive cultural gathering place on the Portland Foreshore. It was created as a place for healing, learning, ceremony, storytelling and connection.

The space acknowledges the Gunditjmara people and provides a permanent place in Portland where Gunditjmara and other First Nations people can hold traditional dances, cultural ceremonies, celebrations, educational activities and truth-telling events.

At the centre of the space is a ceremony circle representing Gunditjmara culture and Songlines. The landscape provides a physical representation of Gunditjmara culture and its continuing connection to Country.

Audio poles have also been installed at the dance ground. Visitors can listen to stories and learn more about Gunditjmara culture, history and connection to the Portland area.

Although the dance ground was designed primarily for Traditional Owner cultural activities, it is also a peaceful public space where families and other visitors can gather, reflect and learn. Casual day-to-day use by the wider community is welcomed.

Opening Hours:

Casual day-to-day public use of the space is welcomed. The space cannot be used for formal sport and recreation, barbecues or camping.

Gunditjmara Traditional Owners have complete use of the space on days of cultural significance, including 26 January and 19 November.
