Port Fairy - Battery Hill

Battery Hill is a short historic walk with sweeping views over Port Fairy Bay, East Beach, the Moyne River and Griffiths Island. Children can explore the old cannon emplacements and imagine why this headland was once part of the town's coastal defences.

The hill was originally called Flagstaff Hill. A flagstaff erected in 1859 helped signal to ships, and cannons were later installed when authorities feared an attack by Russian warships. An 80-pounder cannon remains in its emplacement. Nearby, look for the old bluestone powder magazine and the walking tracks through coastal vegetation.

The walk is a good addition to a stroll along the harbour. The tracks include sandy and uneven sections, so supervise young children around the historic structures and shoreline.

Battery Hill is across the footbridge from the harbour; parking is available near Battery Lane.
