Port Campbell - Soldiers' Memorial Scenic Lookout

The Soldiers' Memorial Scenic Lookout is a peaceful clifftop viewpoint overlooking Port Campbell Bay, the harbour entrance and the Southern Ocean. Set within Public Park Memorial Reserve, the lookout combines beautiful coastal scenery with a memorial honouring local servicemen and women, making it both a place of reflection and one of the best viewpoints in Port Campbell.

A short path leads from the car park at the western end of Lord Street to the memorial and lookout. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views across the bay, watch fishing boats entering and leaving the harbour, and look south towards the rugged Shipwreck Coast. The elevated position also makes it an excellent location for photography, whale watching during the winter migration season and watching the sunset over the ocean.

The lookout is only a few minutes' walk from the centre of Port Campbell and is connected by walking tracks to Prady's Lookout and the cliff edge overlooking the harbour entrance. This makes it an easy addition to a stroll around the township.

PORT CAMPBELL SOLDIERS MEMORIAL

In October 1920, a sub branch of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia was formed in Port Campbell. Within three weeks of its formation, the sub branch called a public meeting to discuss a proposal for a memorial. It was decided that 100 pounds be spent and that the memorial was to be erected at the end of the main street, on land controlled by the Shire Council. The Cobden Times of November 10th announced that Mr Wilcox of Colac won the tender to build the memorial. The original design included flower beds that were to be maintained by the returned soldiers. Concerts and dances were held in December and right through the holiday season to raise funds to beautify the surrounds of the memorial. The total cost of the project was 160 pounds. The memorial was shifted to its present location shortly before December 1935 when the new Ocean Road around the Beacon corner was officially opened.
