Peterborough - Bay of Islands Beach

Bay of Islands Beach is a secluded and spectacular beach surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and dramatic offshore sea stacks. Located within the Bay of Islands Coastal Park, it offers one of the most scenic coastal settings along the Great Ocean Road and is a favourite destination for photographers and nature lovers.

Access to the beach is via a staircase descending from the clifftop lookout. The walk down is relatively short but moderately steep. Once on the sand, visitors are rewarded with stunning views of the famous limestone formations rising from the Southern Ocean. At low tide, the beach provides excellent opportunities for beachcombing and photography, while the surrounding cliffs create a spectacular natural amphitheatre.

Unlike the nearby Port Campbell beaches, Bay of Islands Beach is exposed to the full force of the Southern Ocean. Powerful surf, strong rip currents and rapidly changing conditions make it unsuitable for swimming. Most visitors come to admire the scenery, enjoy a walk along the sand or capture photographs of one of Victoria's most beautiful coastal landscapes.

Surf Safety
Bay of Islands Beach is not a safe swimming beach. The beach is exposed to powerful Southern Ocean swells, strong rip currents and heavy shore breaks.

There are no lifesaving patrols at Bay of Islands Beach.
Swimming is not recommended.
Only access the beach when sea and tide conditions are safe.
Large waves can arrive unexpectedly - keep well back from the water's edge.
Be aware that high tides can significantly reduce the amount of beach available.
