Narbethong - Walindjerri Campground and Walk
About a 1.5 hour drive from Melbourne, and a short drive from the township of Toolangi, you can set up camp or go for a leisurely stroll from the day visitor area through the majestic Californian Redwood plantation and Mountain Ash forest.
It is this unique feature that inspired the Traditional Owners, the Taungurung People, to name the site Walindjerri, meaning 'giants' in the native language. The name represents the battle of these giant trees.
Walindjerri Camp
This camping area provides a toilet and five campsites with back-in bays next to adjacent woodfire firepits for campers. One of the sites also has a picnic table. A walking track links to the nearby picnic area and onto the Redwoods Walk.
Walindjerri Picnic Area
This picnic area offers picnicking under shady eucalypt overstorey, with fire pits, toilet and picnic tables. The walk to the Redwoods takes off from this picnic area.
Redwoods Walk
For those looking for a short, family-friendly adventure, there's a 0.6km return walking trail from the day visitor area that meanders through this captivating forest. Witness the enthralling battle of the giant trees, where the native Mountain Ash forest compete alongside the Californian Redwood trees.
The walk has no steps, gentle hills, well formed track which is clearly sign posted. No experience required.
How to get there
Head north past Narbethong for 2km along the Maroondah Highway, and then turn left onto Plantation Road. Continue along Plantation Road for 7.9km and then turn left onto Stoney Creek Road. Continue along Stoney Creek Road for 1.3km. You will pass an access road on your left hand side to the Walindjerri Camp. Continue on for another 200m to turn left into the day visitor site. Suitable for 2WD vehicles.
