Murtoa - Dunmunkle Sump Oilers Historical Engine Museum

The Dunmunkle Sump Oilers Historical Engine Museum is housed at the former Wimmera Inland Freezing Works on the eastern edge of Murtoa. The museum preserves an impressive collection of historic stationary engines, tractors, machinery and associated artefacts, with many of the engines maintained in working condition.

The major attraction is a set of four huge single-piston Richard Hornsby engines dating from the early 1900s. Originally installed for the Wimmera Inland Freezing Works, the engines remain on their original foundations and are believed to be the only set of four of their type remaining on their original footings anywhere in the world.

The historic engines were used in connection with the freezing works' refrigeration operations. The museum occupies part of the original industrial site and provides an interesting insight into the machinery that supported one of Murtoa's major early industries.

Other exhibits include single-cylinder tractors, vintage engines, farm machinery and equipment collected and restored by members of the Dunmunkle Sump Oilers Machinery Preservation Inc. The organisation was established in 1991 by people interested in preserving historic machinery and later acquired the present site to ensure the Hornsby engines remained in their original location.

A highlight is seeing the large engines operating. Demonstrations are held during special open days and the annual Murtoa's Big Weekend, when members also display and operate a range of privately owned historic engines and machinery.
