Mount Beauty - Places of Historical Interest



The most significant places of historic interest in Mount Beauty and the surrounding area are:

1. Mount Beauty Visitor Information Centre
Part of the re-developed former State Electricity Commission of Victoria's (S.E.C.V.) workshops complex and now houses the K.V.H.S 's museum.

2. Mount Beauty township
Built by the S.E.C.V. to house the workers and their families who were involved with the building of the Kiewa Hydro-Electric Scheme. Walk along Beauty Avenue to see examples of the original timber houses, built circa 1950.

3. The Mount Beauty Community Centre
This centre is heritage listed and is an excellent example of a construction project town recreation facility.

4. The Gorge Walk
Follows the S.E.C.V. road into an old shaft used during construction of the West Kiewa Power Station. It then follows the West Kiewa River up to the Gorge.

5. Bogong Village
The first site accommodation was provided for the Kiewa Hydro - Electric Scheme workers and their families.

6. The Tawonga Store
in the township of Tawonga. This was the first store in the Upper Kiewa Valley and was opened circa 1920.
