Mortlake Dance-O-Mat
The Dance-O-Mat at Tea Tree Lake Reserve is an outdoor, coin-operated dance floor where visitors can play their own music and dance beneath colourful lights.
The quirky community installation features a professional-standard sprung dance floor, four speakers and a lighting system controlled through a brightly decorated former washing machine. Connect a phone or other compatible device using Bluetooth, insert a $1 coin and select your music. The sound system and lights operate for 30 minutes.
The concept was created by New Zealand organisation Gap Filler following the Christchurch earthquakes, when it was used to bring activity and social connection to vacant urban spaces. The Mortlake installation was suggested by Mortlake College P-12 students who participated in a BIG IDEAS workshop in 2019. It officially opened in November 2022.
The Dance-O-Mat is suitable for spontaneous dancing, family fun, dance practice and small social gatherings. It is beside the Mortlake Skate Park and outdoor fitness equipment at Tea Tree Lake Reserve.
Opening Hours:
9am to 10pm daily
Cost:
$1 for 30 minutes of music, lighting and use of the dance floor. Bring a $1 coin and a Bluetooth-enabled device containing your music.
