Mornington Life Saving Club

Mornington Life Saving Club

Located on Mills Beach, 1km north of the Mornington Pier, the club provides a surf lifesaving patrol service at the beach throughout the summer months. Trained and qualified surf life savers voluntarily run the program as dedicated members of the club.

Mornington Life Saving Club is an integral part of the local community providing a safe beach environment, water safety and surf life saver training. Water Safety is the main focus of Mornington Life Saving Club and through our Nipper training program we provide a fun and competitive environment for all our younger members to learn about water safety.

The club's youth group provides a controlled social outlet for teenagers wanting to further their fitness, life saving abilities and competition skills. Mornington Life Saving Club also has a very strong and competitive Boaties group, and the Surf Boats make a very impressive site powering out from the Clubhouse.

Founded in 1914 the club's success has always and continues to rely on the voluntary spirit of its members to assist in the running of the club and its activities. Affiliated with Life Saving Victoria, Mornington Life Saving Club welcomes new members and encourages existing members to keep active and involved.

Nippers
Many activities that nippers undergo are conducted in the water. To ensure that all nippers have a suitable swimming ability to allow them to participate in these activities, Surf Life Saving Australia has developed a Junior Preliminary Skills Assessment for each age group.

Every nipper must participate in this evaluation, prior to participating in any water activity. The evaluation consists of a swim and a float which is progressively increased by age group and must be achieved before the nipper may undertake any water related activities.

From the age of 8 (Under 9), juniors members can begin to compete in swimming and board events at junior carnivals. To ensure that all juniors have the ability, strength and fitness required to complete the courses, they must pass the Competition Skills.

Depending on their age group, children will cover sprints and flags, swimming, board paddling, wading, basic CPR/ first aid skills, junior development and lots of FUN activities. They will also learn surf lifesaving skills, surf awareness, and intrinsically develop personal and emotional skills.

Please Note: Being able to swim competently is an integral part of making children safe at the beach as well as allowing them to actively participate and enjoy surf life saving activities. The nippers program is not a "learn to swim" program. We understand that not all children are strong swimmers and always provide adequate water safety during training.

It is absolutely necessary that a parent or designated guardian is at the beach during the entire duration of nippers.

Starfish Nippers
The program is designed for young people with disabilities to give them beach and water safety awareness skills. The modified program runs in conjunction with the age group Nipper Program.

It caters for children and young adults with special needs from 6 years of age and above. The special needs spectrum includes children with autism, attention deficit disorder, Down Syndrome, Asberger's Sydrome, physical, intellectual and learning disabilities.

Activities include traditional beach games, beach running, beach flags, swimming, board skills, water familiarisation, beach and surf safety, music and Starfish greeting.

Lifesaving
Mornington Life Saving Club is a member of Life Saving Victoria which is the state level organisation of Surf Life Saving Australia. As part of this organisation we undertake to patrol our beaches every weekend and public holiday with the exception of Xmas Day from November through to Easter.

All our patrol members are volunteers and as such - we welcome and encourage new members to become patrol members.

Carnivals
Lifesaving Sport competition plays a major role in the preparation of a lifesaver to meet the physical standards necessary for saving lives in the water. Over the years the competition element of lifesaving has evolved from an aid to the physical preparation of a lifesaver, to its own identity, and plays a major part in the social development of a lifesaver.

All members aged between 13 - 14 years who wish to compete at Junior Carnivals must gain their Surf Rescue Certificate and become active patrolling members of the club. Those members who are aged 15 years and above who wish to compete at carnivals must gain their Bronze Medallion and also become active patrol members.

Of course we have many active patrolling members who do not compete at carnivals.
