Marysville Fishing Guide
Marysville is surrounded by mountain streams and rivers that provide a range of freshwater fishing locations. The following guide identifies ten fishing spots along the Steavenson and Acheron rivers, all within a relatively short drive of Marysville.
Ten Fishing Spots Around Marysville:
Try some of these ten great fishing locations. All are just off sealed roads in the Marysville region beside either the Steavenson or Acheron rivers, and all are within a 20-minute drive of Marysville.Steavenson River:
Vic Oak Picnic Area: Just 3km north of Marysville beside the road to Buxton (C508). There is a picnic area on the left hand side of the road with access to the Steavenson River at the junction of the Taggerty River.
Buxton Road: 6km north of Marysville on the right hand side on the road to Buxton. Immediately after the main road crosses the Steavenson River for the second time there is a small space for a couple of cars with easy access to the river.
Maroondah Highway- Buxton Recreation Reserve: There are several easy access spots to the Steavenson River. From Marysville follow the road to Buxton for 11km then left at the Maroondah Highway for 500m to the reserve which has public toilets and an electric BBQ. On the other side of the road is the Buxton Trout Farm.
Meeting Of The Waters: This grand junction of three rivers (Acheron, Steavenson & Little Steavenson) is very popular with fisherpersons. The Acheron tumbles through a turbulent pool to meet the cooler waters of the Steavenson River, while the Little Steavenson sneaks in beside the rapids. To access this spot, travel 11km to Buxton, then turn left for 500m along the Maroondah Highway and turn down Mareeba Avenue for 1.4km to the reserve at road’s end. There is about 500m of easy access to the Steavenson River at this point in a park like setting. Fisherpersons also walk down stream along the Acheron River from this point.
Acheron River:
Glendale Lane, Taggerty: Follow the road to Buxton then turn right towards Taggerty for 8km along the Maroondah Highway. The Glendale Lane then takes off on the left hand side of a sweeping right hand bend. Follow this road for a kilometre to where it crosses the Acheron River. There is a small reserve immediately after the road crosses this river on the right hand side.
Little River, Taggerty: Following the Maroondah Highway, there is a small reserve on the right hand side in the town of Taggerty. It is also possible to walk down stream along the Little River to its confluence with the Acheron River.
Granton: Follow the main road (C312) back towards Melbourne and Narbethong for 7km where there is a small picnic area on the right hand side with easy access to the Acheron River.
Maroondah Highway- North Creek Road: North of Narbethong there is the remains of a picnic area on the left hand side of the highway where there is access to the Acheron River. Please note access to the river is limited to the area abutting the highway, as there is no public river reserve at this point.
Acheron Way- Granton Road: Follow the Melbourne Road (C512) back to Narbethong for 10km to just before the Maroondah Highway and turn left along the Acheron Way for 4km to Granton Road where it is a 200m drive down the dirt Granton Road where there is access to the Acheron River.
Acheron Way- Upper Acheron: Follow the Melbourne Road (C512) back to Narbethong for 10km to just before the Maroondah Highway and turn left along the Acheron Way for 8km. From this point, there are many places along the next 6km where the Acheron Way is right alongside the Acheron River.
Fishing Regulations:
A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is generally required unless an exemption applies. Trout fishing in Victorian rivers and streams is also subject to a seasonal closed period.
