Lima South - Lake Nillahcootie

Lima South - Lake Nillahcootie

Lake Nillahcootie is situated on the Broken River in north-eastern Victoria, 36km south of Benalla. The storage was built in 1967 by the Rural Water Commission as part of a program to assure water supply in northern Victoria.

The main spillway at Lake Nillahcootie features a unique Gothic arch-shaped crest. The storage also features a secondary spillway that is operated only during severe floods. It uses the 'fuse plug' principle, in which a section of earthen embankment within the secondary spillway (the fuse plug) has been designed so that at a predetermined flood level it will be eroded away and increase the discharge through the spillway.

Recreation facilities available are a large grassed area, car parking, boat ramp, fishing and toilets.

Lake Nillahcootie is a popular place for fishing, swimming and boating. It also has excellent picnic facilities and an attractive lawn area near the dam. Access to the Lake foreshore is restricted as most of the land is privately leased. Camping is not permitted around the foreshore of the lake. Boats can be launched from the main boat ramp.

Fishing - Lake Nillahcootie is a fishing paradise - Golden Perch, Murray Cod and Redfin are among the favourites. The lake is stocked regularly, so there is always plenty to catch. Try lure fishing with medium to deep diving lures or bait fishing with freshwater shrimp.

Boating - If you like high-speed boating, waterskiing, sailing, canoeing, kayaking or jet skiing, Lake Nillahcootie is the place to be. Boats can be launched from the main boat ramp near the dam wall. Normal boating operations apply. Take care to avoid hazards during low water levels, such as submerged stumps and shallow water.

Swimming - There is a designated swimming area with shallow water and nice clean sand in the north west corner picnic area, located about 200m south of the dam wall.

Opening Hours:

Picnic and boating areas are open to the public from 8.00am to sunset daily.
