Leitchville - Kow Swamp

Kow Swamp is a large wetland and water storage covering an extensive area south of Leitchville. It has a circumference of about 15 km and a capacity of approximately 50,910 ML and forms part of the Torrumbarry irrigation system.

The swamp is a peaceful destination for fishing, kayaking, birdwatching, photography and picnicking.

Fishing is one of the main recreational activities. Kow Swamp contains Murray Cod, Golden Perch and Redfin, along with other native and introduced fish. The water is relatively shallow and contains extensive aquatic vegetation, standing timber and submerged snags, so anyone paddling or boating needs to take particular care.

The inlet channel provides one of the better locations for bank fishing. There is a large grassed area, car parking and fishing facilities at Kow Swamp.

Fishing is permitted from the bank or from a human-powered craft, including a canoe, kayak, rowboat, surf-ski or stand-up paddleboard. Motorised craft are not permitted under the protection declaration.

Aboriginal Cultural Heritage:

Ghow Swamp is an Aboriginal place of exceptionally high cultural significance. It contains Aboriginal cultural heritage including artefact scatters, cooking hearths, culturally scarred trees and Ancestral burial places. The Yorta Yorta peoples are the Traditional Owners.

Location:

Approximately 3 km south of Leitchville. Access is available from public reserves around the swamp; the VFA access point is reached via Leitchville South Road.
