Lake Mountain Summit Loop Walk

An easy 4km return walk with plenty of spectacular views of the Victorian Alps Across to Melbourne and the Great Dividing Range from the Yarra Ranges National Park on offer.
With sections that take you through snowgum woodland and stops along the way that look out north to the Alps and south to Marysville and Melbourne, it is a fantastic addition to any big day.
From the Lake Mountain Alpine Resort Village Car Park, follow the wide track as it climbs steeply for 200 metres before levelling out to a gentle incline to the summit. The track to Marysville lookout takes off to the west from just below the summit. From the summit, the walk heads east to the Alps Lookout. From here it passes through an alpine bog and over several granite rock faces covered with lichens and mosses to reach the junction with the Snowy Hill track. Sherlocks lookout is located 100 metres along the Snowy track. Returning to the junction, the walk continues to Taggerty Valley View and then to Gerraty's car park via the summit.
Update at April 2026: The Summit Loop walking trail is partially closed (from the Alps Lookout to Sherlock Lookout) at Lake Mountain until further notice. The closed section has lots of fallen trees and may not be opened for a significant time.
Winter Warning: Navigation on the Summit Loop can be difficult, and is not recommended in heavy or fresh snow. Take great care to follow markers. The area is not patrolled, if proceeding record this number for assistance, Resort Admin 59577201

Review:
This is the best walk at Lake Mountain which includes the Marysville Lookout (after 700m), Lake Mountain Summit (after 800m) and Alps Lookout (after 1100m). Unfortunately, when we did the walk a section of the track was closed and we had to retrace our route from the Alps Lookout which made a total walk distance of 2.2km. The closure meant that we could not visit Sherlock Lookout or Taggerty Valley Lookout.
At the visitor area, where the walk starts, there is an extensive car park, shelter with three tables (2x), four unshaded tables, firepits (wood supplied) with surrounding seats, bike repair station, bins, shaded BBQs and toilets.
The walk starts from the south west side of the southern carpark at Lake Mountain. Initially the walk is uphill along a stony gravel path but then flattens out. Follow the orange triangle markers on the trees for this trail. Before reaching the summit which has a communications tower, there is a 50m branch to the Marysville Lookout which has views of the valleys including thousands of dead trees from bushfires.

At the summit (1433m above sea level), the Summit Walk leads off to the left and the Granite Grind and Cascades Trail lead off from the southern end.

At the Alps Lookout there are big boulders with views. This is the point we had to return because the track was closed.
