Konongwootong Reservoir and A Quiet Place

Konongwootong Reservoir is a peaceful destination for fishing, walking, birdwatching, picnicking and non-motorised water activities. Located about 11 km north of Coleraine, the reservoir is also an important Aboriginal cultural heritage site.

The reservoir was constructed in 1926 to supply water to Casterton and Coleraine. It has a capacity of 1,920 megalitres and is supplied by three spring-fed streams. The reservoir is stocked with brown trout and rainbow trout.

Boats with petrol-powered combustion engines, water-skiing, trail-bike riding and camping are not permitted. A Victorian recreational fishing licence may be required.

A Quiet Place:

A Quiet Place was established in 2014 to recognise the cultural history of the Konongwootong Gunditj people and the Aboriginal people killed during the Fighting Waterholes Massacre in April 1840.

The landscaped memorial includes a walking path, interpretive signs and three stone benches overlooking a natural amphitheatre and wetland. Visitors should treat this culturally significant place with care and respect.
