Koetong - Boggy Creek and Edgars Road Trestle Bridges

The Boggy Creek Trestle Bridge was built in 1915 as part of the Wodonga - Cudgewa railway line, which operated from the early 20th century until rail services ceased in the mid-1990s.
Like other bridges on the line, it was made from timber trestles - a traditional early rail engineering method suited to crossing the wide, vegetated creek valley.
Riders often pause near the 77m long Boggy Creek Bridge as a great photo stop during a long climb from Tallangatta up toward Shelley Station, which was once Victoria's highest rail station on the High Country Rail Trail.
The numerous trestle bridges found along the Wodonga-Cudgewa railway line are a feature that give it a unique place in the railway history of Australia. This bridge over Boggy Creek is thought to be constructed from Blue Gum, a tall eucalypt species found growing locally in moist areas.
The piles are each marked with the month and year of construction, as well as with a P or D to indicate whether it was placed or driven into the foundations.
This bridge is a four pile design in order to give it greater stability and the ability to carry heavier loads. Earlier two pile design bridges were upgraded to four piles in order to support some trains which weighed in excess of 500 tonnes.
Many of the original bridges were replaced or updated with modern materials. This bridge however, remains as it was constructed in 1915.
Location: The bridge is located is four kilometres west of Koetong along the Murray Valley Highway. The bridge is accessible via a short track (approximately 300m) from a small parking and picnic area off Murray Valley Highway. There's a picnic table and lookouts near the bridge area, and local signage helps guide visitors to the site.
There is another trestle bridge in the area, the Edgars Road Trestle Bridge is located in Koetong. The restored historic timber railway trestle bridge located on the former Wodonga-Cudgewa railway alignment near Koetong and is accessed from Edgars Road.
