Jan Juc - Bird Rock Lookout
Bird Rock Lookout is one of the Surf Coast's most spectacular clifftop viewpoints, offering uninterrupted views over Bird Rock, Jan Juc Beach and the rugged coastline stretching towards Bells Beach. Located within the Jan Juc Foreshore Reserve, the lookout is an easy stop along the Surf Coast Walk and is a favourite destination for photographers, walkers and anyone wanting to experience the dramatic scenery of Victoria's surfing coast.
The lookout is named after Bird Rock, a large offshore rock stack that provides an important resting and nesting place for seabirds. Over thousands of years, the relentless action of the Southern Ocean has carved the surrounding sandstone cliffs, creating the impressive coastal landscape seen today. During winter and spring, visitors may also be fortunate enough to spot migrating whales offshore, while dolphins are occasionally seen surfing the waves closer to shore.

A sealed path leads from nearby parking to the lookout, where seating provides a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the ever-changing ocean views. The Surf Coast Walk continues in both directions, linking Jan Juc with Torquay to the east (4.5km) and Bells Beach to the west (3.1km). The lookout is particularly popular at sunrise, when the cliffs glow with warm morning light, and at sunset as the sun sinks over the Southern Ocean.
Access for Dogs:
Dogs are permitted at both Bird Rock Lookout and Little Bird Rock Lookouts but dogs should be kept on leash.
At Jan Juc Beach below the lookouts there are seasonal rules. From 1 December to 28 February and over Easter, dogs are prohibited from 9am–7pm and allowed off-leash under effective control from 7pm–9am. Outside those periods, dogs are allowed off-leash under effective control.
Review:
There are two lookouts in the area - Bird Rock Lookout and Little Bird Rock Lookout which are separated by a 270m long path along the cliff top (or you can drive to the carpark for each lookout). We actually found the views better from Little Bird Rock Lookout.
To the west of Bird Rock Lookout there are toilets and water tap beside the path and shops are 150m away.
There is a staircase to the Jan Juc Beach at Little Bird Rock but no access to the beach at Bird Rock.
