Hepburn - Breakneck Gorge Puddling Site

Hidden within Hepburn Regional Park, the Breakneck Gorge Puddling Site is one of the most significant surviving relics of Victoria's gold rush era. The site contains the remains of a rare gold puddling machine, a technology developed on the Victorian goldfields to separate gold from clay-rich soil. Located on the steep banks of Spring Creek near Breakneck Gorge, the site provides a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity and hard work of the miners who flocked to the region during the 1850s and 1860s.
The puddling machine sits on a stone-retained platform below a former water race, now used as part of the walking track network through the gorge. Visitors can also see evidence of historic mining activity in the surrounding landscape, including old water races, mine workings and nearby heritage-listed gold mining sites. The site is located within a scenic bushland setting and can be explored as part of a walk to Breakneck Gorge, the Blowhole, Golden Spring and Jacksons Lookout.
The Breakneck Gorge Puddling Site is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is considered particularly important because it is associated with deep lead mining beneath ancient basalt flows. Surviving examples of this type of mining infrastructure are rare in Victoria, making the site an important part of the state's gold mining heritage.
Puddling machines were developed on the Victorian goldfields to process clay-rich soils that could not be efficiently worked using traditional methods. Heritage Victoria considers this technology to be one of the few mining innovations developed entirely in Victoria.
