Hamilton - Petschel House

Petschel House is a historic bluestone homestead, art gallery, studios and extensive garden on the outskirts of Hamilton.

The original bluestone house was built circa 1856 by the Rentsch and Petschel families. Today the property is home to artists Jenni Mitchell and Mervyn Hannan, who relocated their studios and gallery from Eltham to Hamilton.

Petschel House is set on 14 acres of gardens incorporating formal and cottage-style areas, native plantings, an orchard, lake and paddocks with sheep and alpacas. Visitors can wander through the gardens and enjoy the combination of art, historic architecture and rural surroundings.

The gallery and studios display works by Jenni Mitchell and Mervyn Hannan, while the property also incorporates artists' studios and picture framing facilities.

Private and small-group art classes and workshops are offered, with an emphasis on painting from observation and developing an understanding of colour, tone and technique. Beginners and experienced artists are welcome.

The historic homestead and surrounding gardens make Petschel House an interesting destination for visitors interested in art, gardens and Western District history.
