Hamilton - Bandicoot Wildlife Walk

The Hamilton Bandicoot Wildlife Walk passes through the Hamilton Community Parklands and around the former Hamilton reservoir. The parklands contain a protected enclosure established to support the survival of the endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot (Perameles gunnii).

The walk begins at the Hamilton Institute of Rural Learning (HIRL), which provides access to the bandicoot enclosure. Continue past the HIRL offices and follow the walking track, or follow the Cyril Lampard Walk from near the northern end of the HIRL buildings.

The circuit takes a little over 30 minutes and passes through natural bushland, native grasslands and wetland habitat. Interpretive signs along the route feature paintings and information about the native plants and animals found in the parklands.

Native birds and other wildlife may be seen during the walk. Eastern Barred Bandicoots are primarily nocturnal, so sightings are not guaranteed and are more likely around dusk or after dark.

The HIRL grounds also include an Indigenous food garden, bandicoot mural, children's sensory walk-through garden, wetlands and the quirky Spoonville display.
