Great Western - Best's Wines Underground Cellars

Great Western - Best's Wines Underground Cellars

Best’s Wines is one of Australia's historic family-owned wineries, established by Henry Best at Great Western in 1866. Visitors can explore the original hand-dug underground cellars, visit the historic Stables Cellar Door and learn about more than 160 years of winemaking at the property.

Henry Best purchased the Concongella property in 1866 and planted his first vines in 1868. The vineyard contains some exceptionally old and rare vines, including the historic Nursery Block with almost 40 grape varieties.

Underground Cellars

The original underground cellars were hand dug during the 1870s and can be explored on a free self-guided walk.

The atmospheric cellars are not simply a historic display - they are still used today for maturing Best's premium red wines and storing older vintages.

Visitors can walk beneath the winery and see the stone-lined cellar spaces while learning about the property's long winemaking history.

Stables Cellar Door

Best's historic Cellar Door is housed in the original timber stables constructed by Henry Best in 1867 to accommodate his vineyard horses.

The old red gum slab building was later relocated in sections and opened as the Best's Cellar Door in 1974.

Historic items displayed inside include:
  • Henry Best's original journal dating from 1866
  • Old winery equipment
  • Historic photographs and memorabilia
  • Maps relating to the property and surrounding district
Wine tasting experiences are available at the Cellar Door and can be booked in advance. Visitors can also select local and Victorian produce to create a cheese platter.

Historic Vineyard

Visitors can also see the original Nursery Block plantings, which form an important part of Australia's wine history.

The Nursery Block contains almost 40 grape varieties, including some that remain unidentified. Some vines on the Concongella property date from 1868 and are among Australia's oldest surviving vines.
