Fyansford Paper Mill Heritage Tours

Explore one of Geelong's most significant industrial heritage sites on a guided walking tour of the historic Fyansford Paper Mill precinct. The tours are conducted by volunteers from the Rotary Club of Highton and provide access to parts of the heritage-listed complex that are not normally open to the public.

The Fyansford Paper Mill was constructed between 1876 and 1878 using locally quarried bluestone and brick. The complex includes the original mill buildings, manager's house, workers' cottages, bluestone water race, tower and stone weir. Paper manufacturing began in 1878, initially using rags and cloth which were shredded and processed into paper.

Guides explain the paper-making process and recount stories from the site's long and sometimes surprising history. These include the mill's role in World War II sea-mine production, when the site was taken over by the Royal Australian Navy, as well as stories of ice making and other activities at the mill.

The tour includes a museum viewing and provides an opportunity to see historic areas of the precinct that general visitors cannot normally access. After the tour visitors can explore the modern Fyansford Paper Mill precinct, which now contains galleries and artisan studios as well as a winery, restaurant and cafe.

Funds raised from the tours are used by the Rotary Club of Highton to support community and charitable projects.
