Flinders Peak Walk (You Yangs Regional Park, Little River)

The 3.2km return Flinders Peak Walk is the signature hike in the You Yangs Regional Park, taking walkers to the highest point of the granite ranges at 319 metres above sea level. Although relatively short, the walk rewards visitors with spectacular 360-degree views across Melbourne, Geelong, Port Phillip Bay, the Brisbane Ranges and the volcanic plains of western Victoria.
The trail climbs steadily through open woodland before tackling a series of stone steps and granite outcrops to reach the summit lookout. It's one of the best short summit walks within an hour of Melbourne.
There are a range of facilities at the car park and picnic area including toilets, water tap, picnic tables, shelter, information boards and BBQs.
Walk Description
Begin at the Turntable Car Park and follow the clearly signposted Flinders Peak Track. The first section climbs gently through open forest of yellow gum, red box and stringybark before reaching the steeper upper slopes.
While ascending, keep an eye out for the Bunjil Geoglyph - a massive stone sculpture created by artist Andrew Rogers honoring the creator spirit of the local Wadawurrung people
Stone steps assist walkers through the granite outcrops as the trail winds towards the summit. The final climb is moderately steep but well formed, making it suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
At the summit, large granite slabs provide uninterrupted views across the surrounding landscape. On a clear day you can see Melbourne's skyline to the east, Geelong and Corio Bay to the south-west, the Brisbane Ranges to the north-west and Port Phillip Bay stretching towards the horizon.
Return to the Turntable Car Park via the same route.
Best Time to Visit
The Flinders Peak Walk can be enjoyed year-round, but autumn, winter and spring offer the most comfortable walking conditions. Cooler temperatures make the climb to the summit more enjoyable, while spring brings colourful wildflowers that brighten the surrounding woodland.
During summer, start early in the day to avoid the heat, as much of the upper section is exposed with limited shade. Always carry plenty of drinking water and avoid walking on days of Extreme or Catastrophic Fire Danger, as You Yangs Regional Park may close due to bushfire risk.
