Fish Creek Historic Walk



There is a short walk in Fish Creek, mainly along Falls Road, which highlights historical buildings.
Site No. 1 - Fish Creek & District Fire Station & Emergency Services
Established in 1944, prior to this the residents needed to help each other fight the fires. The brigade was registered with the Country Fire Authority (CFA) in 1945. The Fire Station as it is today was built by volunteer labour in May 1975 and was extended in 1979.

Site No. 2 - Post Office & Telephone Exchange
This Post Office was built in its present position in 1921 with the telephone exchange located at the side.
Adjacent to the Post Office three was a chemist run by Mrs Sloane.

Site No. 3 - T. Martin Boot & Shoe Maker
Circa 1900.
Later became a General Store as it remains today.

Site No. 5 - The Bank of Australasia
The Bank of Australasia circa 1910. Designed by A & K Henderson. Built by Oscar Peterson. Later to become the ANZ Bank.

Site No. 6 - Tom Martin's Shoe Repair Shop
This building opened as Tom Martin's Shoe Repair Shop circa 1910. In 1931 it became Jock Train Leather Worker & Boot Repairer Shop and later a milk bar, greengrocer, hairdressing salon and bookshop.

Site No. 7 - Tom Martin's Shoe Repair Shop
This building was established in the 1920's by Jimmy Drew as a photographic shop at the rear and a post office at the front. Mrs Vera Twentyman later established her "Economic Shop" followed by a Haberdashery and many other shops.

Site No. 8 - Fish Creek Memorial Hall
The Fish Creek Mechanics Institute was originally situated on the corner of Falls and Keanes Road from 1900 (on the site of the Butter Factory Office).

Site No. 9 - The Fish Creek Bakery
Originally established by Tom Laurie who made very tasty pies and sent bread to the farms in cream cans. Percy Jones was the first baker and many followed including Harry Tibballs, Osbornes and Whibleys.

Site No. 10 - Residence & Plumbing Supply Shop
This residence was first owned by Bill & Rita Osborne and many local families lived here. Part of the side building was used as a plumbing supply.

Site No. 11 - P.J. Keane Homestead
Previously owned and built by Mr. Keane about 1904. He was a prominent citizen and a shire councillor for the Shire of Gippsland. The property was later sold to Brian Hynes who married the eldest Keane daughter Rose. In 1930 Attilio Stefani purchased the property and it has been in the Stefani family ever since.

Site No. 12 - Fish Creek Butter Factory
The factory was established on site in 1910 by Grain Merchant Greenfield from Ballarat and was known as "The Creamery". In 1930 the factory burnt down but was re-established again in 1933. Whole milk collection was introduced in 1962.

Site No. 14 - Fish Creek Butcher
The first butcher was J.C.W Hall in 1948 and over the years many butchers followed including Jim Sutherland, the Ryan Brothers, Bernie Buckley and Mick Griffin.

Site No. 15 - Motorcycle Garage
The business was established around 1929 by Joe Osborne together with Karl (Charlie) Winter his mechanic. Many businesses have followed including the Linga Longa Cafe and petrol station.

Site No. 16 - Harry Jones Wine Saloon
This was originally a wine and billiard saloon established by Mr and Mrs Harry Jones. Harry was a Jack of all trades including being a barber and saw sharpener. Since then many businesses have been established at this site.
Now Long John Pickles, 2 Old Waratah Rd, Fish Creek
Site No. 17 - R.W. Graham Blacksmith
Mr Graham opened the business here in the early 1900's. The familiar sound of a hammer on the anvil echoed throughout the township. Many businesses were established here over the years including Murray Osborne's garage.
