Eagle Point - Mitchell River Silt Jetties

The Mitchell River Silt Jetties are naturally formed banks of deposited river silt extending about 8km from Eagle Point into Lake King. Created over thousands of years, they form a remarkable river delta described as the longest naturally formed silt jetties in the world.

Visitors can drive along the southern jetty, walk beside the shoreline, cycle, fish, watch birds or explore the waterways by canoe or kayak. The narrow strips of land provide views across the Mitchell River, Jones Bay and Lake King, with pelicans, swans and other waterbirds commonly seen. Sunrise and sunset are particularly good times for wildlife viewing.

The southern jetty can be followed by road from Eagle Point towards Point Dawson. The mostly flat gravel tracks are suitable for walking, cycling and many prams, although sections can become muddy. The narrow gravel road may have bumps and potholes, and drivers need to watch carefully for walkers and cyclists.

Facilities

Public toilets are located off Rivermouth Road near the boat ramp car park. Visitors planning to travel farther along the jetties should carry drinking water, sun protection and everything required for their visit.

Safety

The jetties are exposed to changing weather and water conditions. Hazards include submerged objects, flash flooding, snakes, vehicles and pedestrians. Camping and fires are not permitted, boating and speed restrictions apply, and drones require a permit.

Access for Dogs:

Dogs are not permitted in the Mitchell River Silt Jetties Gippsland Lakes Reserve.

From Bairnsdale, follow Forge Creek Road and then Rivermouth Road towards Eagle Point. Continue beyond the Eagle Point sign to the toilet and boat ramp car park. Leave the vehicle here to explore on foot or continue along the southern jetty towards Point Dawson.
