Daylesford - Jubilee Lake Mineral Spring

This spring is located along the Jubilee Lake Walking Track, at the eastern end of Jubilee Lake in Daylesford. It is a 500m stroll beside the lake from the carpark to the mineral spring via a boulevard of elm trees.
At a meeting of the Daylesford Borough Council, Mr F. A. Horsfall, the Town Clerk, made the following report, as recorded in the Daylesford Advocate of 22 October 1914:
“Tourists Grant investigations at Jubilee Lake have revealed a good mineral spring. It tested as high as 30 gallons an hour per hour on Thursday last. As the spring is worthy of attention, I would recommend that application should be made for a grant of £50 towards improvements.”
The paper went on to report:-
“Mr Horsfall’s recommendations were very heartily adopted. Cr Harris, who resides at Jubilee Lake, informs us that the waters of the new spring are of a remarkably clear, sparkling character, and delightful to the palate. The spring will prove a very decided additional asset to the already seductive attractions of Jubilee Lake and vicinity.”
In 1929, a bore was drilled and fitted with a hand pump. It was decommissioned and replaced with a new bore in 2002.
Jubilee Lake’s Mineral Water
The mineral water at Jubilee Lake (MS 51) is a magnesium-sodium bicarbonate type.
Located in what was once quite an active gold mining area, the water first flowed into a simple drained pit. In 1929, a pump was drilled and fitted with a hand bore and the pit was closed.
The water contains less chloride, sulphur and iron than the Hepburn Springs mineral waters, but more sulphur than water from the neighbouring Hepburn Springs.
Natural Mineral Water Quality Advice
Water from natural mineral springs is untreated and its safety cannot be guaranteed.
It should not be used as a routine drinking water source as mineral water may contain naturally occurring elements at levels that may be harmful if regularly consumed, and microorganisms that may cause illness.
Mineral spring water quality is tested regularly for E. coli and other naturally occurring elements.
Mineral springs may be closed periodically while testing is undertaken.
