Cowwarr Weir

Cowwarr Weir

Cowwarr Weir is popular spot for recreation and non-powered water activities and is an ideal place for a day trip with the whole family.

Cowwarr Weir is well patronised for swimming, kayaking, fishing and picnicking, with lots of shady spots by the water. There are pleasant walks around the reserve and it is popular with bird-watchers. There are picnic tables and toilets and but please note there are no BBQ facilities.

No powered boats are allowed on the weir and camping is not permitted.

Cowwarr Weir is located on Rainbow Creek, which is a breakaway section of the Thomson River near the Cowwarr township in Gippsland.

After entering the area from the south along Weir Road, the road splits. The left hand branch goes down to the west side of the water which has grassy areas and toilets. The right hand (straight) road goes over the spillway to a grassy area on the east and north side of the water which has tables and toilets.

There are general warnings for the location including deep water, drop off, sumberged obstacles and currents. The western side has some shallower water for a more gradual entry into the water for paddling or swimming. There are buoys strung across the water to restrict access to the spillway area and swimming near the spillway/flood gates is definitely not recomended.

Opening Hours:

Cowwarr Weir is open between 8am and 8pm.
